May 8, 2024 – Reuters reports that U.S. prosecutors are investigating Tesla Inc. for potentially misleading investors and consumers about the capabilities of its Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (FSD) systems, according to sources familiar with the matter.
The Department of Justice is examining statements made by Tesla and CEO Elon Musk that suggested the cars could achieve full autonomy.
Although Tesla’s systems assist drivers in steering, braking, and lane changing, they do not constitute complete self-driving technologies. Tesla has consistently cautioned drivers to remain prepared to take control at any moment.
The investigations are also looking into several incidents, including fatal crashes involving Tesla cars with activated Autopilot, which has prompted an independent review and a significant recall.
Additionally, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is scrutinizing Tesla’s representations to investors regarding the functionality of its driver assistance systems.
In October of the previous year, Tesla disclosed that the Justice Department had requested information about its Autopilot and FSD systems.
This investigation does not necessarily imply wrongdoing by Tesla, and potential outcomes could range from criminal charges and civil penalties to no action at all.
